Merry Christmas!!

Uncle Brian entertained the nephews while waiting for Christmas Eve dinner.

Grandma Cutlan and Mom helped me collect Spode Christmas dishes for many years. Now I love to serve my Christmas dinner on these special dishes. Both of my grandmas and my mom were such excellent examples of hosting memorable Christmas celebrations. My hope is that my nephews will always have fond memories of Christmas Eve at Aunt Kristy's and Uncle Brian's.

We have had a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Everyone came to our house on Christmas Eve and I did the Carlson family traditional dinner -- Grandma Carlson's "Beef Straganof." The first year we were married and I wasn't able to go home for Christmas, I cried on Christmas Eve when I realized my family was having the traditional dinner and I wasn't there. It was that year that I decided I would start my own traditional and make the dinner myself for the Walker family. I thinking they are finally starting to get used to such a unique dish! We had a festive time; everyone enjoyed the evening.

Christmas Day was quite relaxing. We opened our gifts from each other this morning and then went to my in-laws for dinner around 1:00 p.m. The Walker Christmas is quite chaotic with 6 little boys, but lots of fun! We are tired but what fun to spend the day with loved ones. We hope you have had a wonderful day as well.

Tomorrow Brian has to go to work. I'm going to go with him and work on my final exams and grades. My goal is to have everything done by the time we leave for North Carolina on Friday!! I will post more pictures tomorrow. Now it is time for bed!

Sorry! I've Been Kind of Busy!

We are almost done with school!! Yeah!! We had a Christmas program last night and a Christmas breakfast this morning!! One of the activities this morning was a "Teacher Wrapping Contest." My class succeed in immobilizing me, but did not strategize as to how to do it creatively and win the contest. I guess the thought of incapacitating me was so exciting they forgot to devise a plan first! Well, it was fun and a special time for the students to realize their teachers really care! Sometimes I think they wonder if we are just around to make life challenging! We have three more days of exams and then--freedom!!
I am printing my Christmas letter, applying the mailing labels, making chocolate covered pretzels for goodie bags, fine-tuning exams and loving the Christmas bustle. Hope all is going well with you!

English Field Trip

This week we took the high school English students on a field trip to our downtown auditorium. We saw a theatre company present five short stories which included:

"The Fall of the House of Usher"
"The Ransom of Red Chief"
"The Open Window"
"The Dangerous Game"
"The Lady or the Tiger"

We have studied most of these stories in English class and so it was so much fun for the students to see the stories come alive on stage. I was so pleased when even some of the guys in my class who consider themselves "Red Necks" came up to me and said, "that was pretty cool, Mrs. Walker." I'm trying to bring culture and appreciate for classical literature into their lives!! Maybe we made some headway this week!!

After the play we went to their favorite restaurant -- Burger King!!!

What fun to do something different from the ordinary day of school.

These are several of my "drama girls" who loved the plays!!

Several of the guys who weren't quite sure they wanted to go see a play!!

It wasn't as bad as they thought after all. As you can tell, they are dramatic as well!!

More Pictures From Last Weekend

We went out for my early birthday dinner on Saturday night!!

Wow!! What a cute couple!! What fun we had shopping and dining!

Double date dinner at "The Food Works"!! Yummy food!! Classy atmosphere!!

Then we wrapped up the evening at Remembrandts, our favorite

coffee shop in the Bluff View Art District.

Here are Pop and I having a memorable father-daughter time!!

My Parents Have Arrived!

We were so happy for my parents to arrive this afternoon!! They have had a week of business travels in Texas, Mississippi and Alabama. I'm so thankful their schedule allowed them to spend a few days with us. Of course, we had much to catch up on upon arrival and had the coffee pot brewing immediately. Don't my mom and I look like sisters??:) I love her new hairstyle!

Then, of course, we had to eat dinner. I made another meal!! Get it down in the record books, I haven't cooked such "big" meals since school started. My dad isn't really mad; I don't think he was ready for the camera to flash!!:) We dined on rump roast and all of the fixings. Then we sat and talked forever. So much fun!!

Finally we all ended up in the office, including Essie. I showed them my blog, my Facebook friends, etc. When Pop got on and started to check his sites, Essie was mesmerized. This is where she sits while I do my computer work. I couldn't believe she stayed when he started working. I told Mom she knows they are family. She hides when everyone else comes! Well, we are all off to bed to prepare for our big day of shopping tomorrow!! Good night!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

We started our day at Krispy Kreme!! This was Brian's idea. They have delicious hot doughnuts. I have been so faithful to my eating plan all these many months that it was fun to splurge today!! Then we took our doughnuts to Starbucks and read the paper!! Ah, the joys of having the day off!

Our friend Sheila came for lunch around noon. I cooked my first Thanksgiving dinner all by myself!! Everyone said it was really good. We had a lot more food than is shown in the picture. I made turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, seven-layer salad, rolls, coffee and Sheila brought pumpkin and apple pies. Whew!! We had lots left over!!

Then we relaxed in the living room sipping coffee and eating pumpkin pie. Finally we took a long walk and reminisced about past Thanksgivings. God has been so good to us! We have so much for which to be thankful!!

Hope you have had a good day as well!! Happy Thanksgiving from the Walkers!!

I have a new camera!!

Well, I am back for real now. Although things have calmed down the last few weeks, I knew I was getting my camera soon and wanted to wait to get up and publishing again with pictures to illustrate! Sunday Best Buy had a fantastic deal on just the camera I wanted. I dropped everything, drove to the store and bought my camera. Now I'm in business. I am updating my some of my house pictures and will have pictures of Thanksgiving this weekend. My parents are coming on Friday!! They have been in Dallas all week, and it was too much for my mom with her back problems to drive straight through. We are excited to see them on
Friday!!

Here are some pictures from the spring that were stuck on my memory card when I dropped my camera at AACS Nationals at Bob Jones. I guess if there is a time to drop the camera and a break it, it should not be after the first time you win first place!! But, alas, that is what happened!! I'll try to comment about the pictures. Here they are:

Leimu and Kimberly won first place in duet acting and performed "Peter Pan" in the final assembly on Thursday night. It was really a crowning moment. I participated in AACS nationals while in high school; I even won second place in dramatic interp as a senior. While I have taken numerous students throughout the years to compete, this was the first time I have had students win first place. I was so proud of the girls. They were fabulous!

My Reader's Theater group also competed at nationals with a delightful presentation entitled "Three Sideways Stories from Wayside School." They were adorable and wowed the judges and audiences all the way to the final round. I told them they reminded me of the team in "Facing the Giants." Here we were a little school from Tennessee that no one had ever heard of and they held their own and competed with the "Big Dogs." They were great as well. They came in 5th and were beaten by the team from Killian Hill coached by a good friend of mine. I didn't mind losing to such a fantastic act--Riki Tiki Tavi.

We are alive and well!

While all of my friends and family members have been busy blogging and enjoying communicating with each other, I have had my nose buried in books! We have been living life in the fast lane--quick dinners, late nights, early mornings, and stops at Starbucks to breathe. We love it! However, there comes a point that a slowing of the pace is necessary. Tonight has been such a night. I have cleaned out my email, checked on all of my Facebook friends and am now updating my blogging friends of Walker World happenings.

At school last week we were blessed with a visit from an accreditation team of seven members led by my wonderful father-in-law. What a great experience! I was reminded how necessary goals and objectives, organization and a well-run school is. They left no stone unturned. I had observers in my room for two days. Wow! No pressure! I always love an audience, but when I saw them in the back going through my gradebook, lesson plan book, and every other document I had to submit, I was so thankful for my excellent training at MBBC.

Anyway, the accreditation visit went well and we received a high rating. It took the rest of the week to recover and come back down to earth. Last weekend we crashed after our whirlwind month of activity. Although the remainder of the fall will continue to be busy, the bulk of the really busy days are over (we hope!).

One really exciting tidbit of news is that my homeroom class sold their quota for the school fundraiser to win several prizes including $100 for their teacher! I'm going to use the money to purchase a new digital camera. Sooo, we may be able to post more pictures of events, family, friends, etc. very soon. Thanks for all of the comments and concern. We'll try to keep our updates more current.

P.S. Check out my parents' blog they have posted lots of pictures of their recent trip!!

Another Busy Week Has Passed!

We have had another outstanding week filled with activity and blessing. This week I taught and Brian worked on Monday and Tuesday. Then on Wednesday Brian, Randy Scallions and I headed to Montgomery, Alabama for the Alabama Christian Educators' Convention. What a treat to have a suite for two days at the Country Inn and Suites! Just like a little vacation with delicious meals, wonderful fellowship and, of course, a little bit of work! We just love going to conventions, seeing old friends and meeting so many new friends. What a privilege to be in Christian work laboring with godly men and women who have such a passion for Christian education!

We made it home tonight in good time and have already unpacked. Essie (our cat) was glad to have us home. She has been by herself quite a bit the last few weeks. Grandpa and Grandma Walker visited her yesterday and they said she was glad to see them!:)

Tomorrow morning (Saturday) I get to report for duty at school for a teacher workday!! Yeah! We are preparing for an accreditation visit which is only two weeks away. We have a fantastic principal who has everything in order and wants our school to be squeaky clean! I don't mind going. This means that we will have Good Friday off as well.

My parents have had quite the adventures this week as well. Last Saturday they attended the Wisconsin Badgers football game in Madison with my brothers and sister-in-law. They also visited the Tackeberrys and Turbetts in Rockford. Then they were in Aurora, Illinois on Thursday for the ACSI teacher's convention and saw many of our friends from Calvary Baptist in Normal. I love to get the report from them about the people they have seen. They are having a great time and are now heading to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania for next week's convention.

Anyway, that is the weekly update from the Walker's!! Hope you are doing well!! Have an enjoyable weekend! We love the posts from family and friends! Keep them coming!

We Survived!

We just returned home a few hours ago from a whirlwind convention. What a fabulous time we had!
Our workshops went so well. However, I must admit I had a mishap before or during every workshop! I tell my students that the devil always fights us when we are trying to do something for the Lord. It is part of spirtual warfare, I guess:). The first mishap was the death of my laptop 30 minutes before the first session! Panic! I have used the crazy thing every day since the school year began; Thursday morning was the day it happened to die. I calmly prayed a quick prayer for help! Sure enough one of secretaries (Becky Wilder, MBBC grad) graciously offered to loan me her laptop to hookup to my projector and the show went on!!

That afternoon in my Storytelling workshop the visual aid for my story malfunctioned. I was adlibbing for a few minutes while I tried to refold the newspaper I was using to tell "The Rainhat" story that calls for one piece of newspaper that is transformed into various different hats. The teachers patiently waited and within moments we were off again.
I concluded the story workshop with the story of "Sisters Midge and Evie" (pictured above) and several of their childhood adventures on Galewood Ave. in Chicago. I shared how both of these little girls grew up and married godly Christian men. God obviously guided and directed them throughout their lives. Evie's husband George was killed in a plane crash leaving her a widow with four small children all of whom have grown up to serve the Lord. There was not a dry eye in the room as I concluded the story to reveal that Evie and George Carlson were my grandparents who are now together with the Lord, and their son Gerry is my dad. As a result of the godly heritage of my family, many of the lives of our family members have been influenced to love and serve Jesus. I am so thankful for the legacy we have. God is so good!! He deserves all of the glory and praise.

Now we must rest!

Busy Days!

I just realized that I haven't even looked at my blog for a week! Things have been so busy at school and home. Brian and I both worked all weekend on our workshops for the Tenneessee Association of Christian Schools teacher's convention which is this Thursday and Friday. My parents will be at the Great Lakes Convention in South Bend. Dr. Ice invited us to speak at their convention as well, but, alas, family won out. My brother-in-law is the coordinator for TACS!! Next week we go to Montgomery, Alabama to speak at the Alabama Assoc. of Chr. School convention. These are busy days, but they are fun!! Plus, we are learning soooo much!! Here are our titles:

Brian --
"Using Portfolios in the Classroom"
"The ABCs of Test Construction"
"Enhancing Student Achievement through Group Learning"
"Using Survey Research to Improve Your School"

Kristy --
"Teacher, Tell Me a Story!"
"Grading Essays Made Easy"
"Are Your Students 'Speech-less'?"
"Is Your Classroom Calm or Chaotic?"

Tailgating with the Seniors!

This is my homeroom class -- the Seniors-- Class of 2008! (The girl with the hamburger is my "drama queen" -- can you tell? The guy with the red shirt doesn't like to have his picture taken -- can you tell?) Although the group is small, we are having a good year! Our school started a football program this year made up of 6-8th graders. While their beginnings are humble, as are the scores, the seniors wanted to show their support. For the home game last Thursday they asked if they could tailgate, grill hamburgers and have fun. In order to make sure everything was under control, I volunteered to supervise.

We had such a fun time -- actually it was a crazy time. The guys sold plates of delicious food for $1.00 a plate! I tried to get them to charge more, but they didn't want to. Then I realized how neat it was that they were giving to others and having such a grand time doing it. What a blessing to work with young people! Although there are constant challenges, the rewarding moments are sweet.

We Will Never Forget!

Unbelievably it has been 6 years since the catastrophic events we have grown accustomed to calling "9/11." I recounted for my classes today the series of events that my family and I went through that day.

Around 10:00 a.m. that day I went to class meetings and the class chaplain was praying for the country. I had not yet heard of the tragedies that had already occurred and was informed when the prayer was complete. After the meeting was quickly dismissed, we rushed to the student center to watch the televisions. I believe the news about the Pentagon being hit was just beginning to break. Suddenly my heart went to my throat when I realized that the AACS national legislative meeting was taking place in Washington, DC. My dad, Brian's dad and his brother along with many Christian school leaders were in our Nation's Capitol. I tried to call on my cell phone to no avail. What a feeling of helplessness I had at that moment of initial shock. Quickly I shifted my cry to the Lord, and left the matter in His sovereign hands. I found the account that my dad wrote of their unbelievable experiences. I read this to my classes today. Although it is lengthy, I think you will find it to be a blessing. The picture is my dad and Brian at the spot where my dad learned of the attacks while standing outside the executive offices of the White House. My parents took us to D.C. and my dad recounted the experience for us. Incidentally, Brian and his dad are in D.C. today at the same annual meeting.

My account of September 11, 2001 by Gerry Carlson:

On Monday morning September 10, 2001 a PAFC board member and I drove to Washington D.C., to attend a legislative conference for Christian school leaders. Little did we realize the extraordinary significance of the conference theme when it was introduced at the opening session on Monday night. That theme, "For Such A Time As This," became so prophetic and momentous as the events unfolded over the next twenty-four hours.

Tuesday morning, after an hour-long preliminary meeting, the entire group of about 140 was loaded into buses at about 9:00 a.m. to travel from the Holiday Inn on the Hill up Pennsylvania Ave. to the White House complex for a special "White House Briefing." The buses dropped us on 15th and E Street, which is on the east side of the White House grounds. We leisurely walked up the sidewalk to Pennsylvania Ave. on this gorgeous morning. We were surrounded by numerous tourists and government workers -- all enjoying the beauty of that very special place.
Then we walked west in front of the White House to 17th Street where we were to enter into the Old Executive Office Building to be cleared by White House security. As we arrived at the entrance we were only there a few minutes before a group of employees began to quickly emerge from the building. Immediately we were told to get away from the building because a plane was heading toward the White House.

I must confess that my first thought was that a small private, plane, piloted by a kook, was trying to make some crazed point. So we obeyed the policemen who began to shout at us and we moved down the street for protection. At the same time cell phones began to chirp and members of our group began to receive calls from family and staff members in different parts of the country. Near me was a pastor from Hackensack, New Jersey, who received a call that gave us the shocking news about the first hit to the World Trade Towers.

In the minutes that followed we began to learn the tragic story. It also began to dawn on us that we were definitely in harms way. I remember fear beginning to rush into my mind due to the realization that our nation's capitol was under terrorist attack. And here we were -- a block away from the seat of America's power. Then I remember one of the men saying to three or four of us -- "let's pray!" There we stood -- praying for our safety and for our country. Then I can say that God's peace came to my heart. And all up and down that street groups were calling heaven -- asking for God's strength for us and wisdom for our country's leaders.

In a few moments another call told us that the Pentagon had been hit. I did not learn until today that my colleague, and another friend in the group, saw the aircraft circle above us. Perhaps this occurred while I was in the prayer group -- I don't know. I do know that God was good to keep me from seeing that plane. Because of my long time acquaintance with the Washington area, I would have known that this meant something was terribly wrong. I know that all aircraft are strictly prohibited from leaving a narrow route along the Potomac River on approach to Reagan National Airport. The Lord not only protected us -- He throttled my fear by keeping my mind in the palm of His hand.

Soon our group was urged to move west to 19th Street and then south toward Constitution Ave. to an area where we could maybe meet our buses. By now the traffic was turning to absolute gridlock as all government workers poured out of the buildings and headed for home. When we reached Constitution Ave. the sirens began to wail as fire engines; police cruisers, and many unmarked law enforcement vehicles began to emerge from all directions.

Then we saw the large cloud of dark smoke emerging from the Pentagon -several miles to the southwest. It was then that the reality really began to set in. The unthinkable had happened. Everything had changed. But the changeless God of the universe was right there with us on Constitution Ave. And we could sense His protection and peace.

We've learned that the plane made two: passes over the White House. Could it be that God kept that plane from exploding into the White House specifically because 140 Christian leaders were there at the door? We don't know God's ways. I just know that God's protection was on our lives. He must have things for us yet to do. What a challenge! What a privilege!

Labor Day Weekend

I love Labor Day Weekend! Does anyone remember when school started after Labor Day? At least school used to start later when I was in elementary school. We lived in Minnesota then. I remember going to the Minnesota State Fair all day on Monday. After riding rides, eating cotton candy and looking at the smelly animals, we returned home, took our baths and laid out our new school outfits, shoes and bookbags. I always loved my new "first day" outfit. Since I have always been a "school girl," I always loved the first day of school. Going to school represented the start of a new social year! I never wanted to miss a day of school because I might miss an important event. I still feel that way!

Although we have been in school for two weeks, I still feel like tomorrow is a new start. We have had a fantastic weekend working, resting, visiting with family and friends. Now we are ready to embark on the next 11 weeks of school/work with no breaks. During these next three months Brian and I will speak at two Christian school conventions (Tennesse and Alabama), my school will go through the rigors of an accreditation visit, and the holiday season will be in full swing when we break again for Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for life, health and the excitement of a new season.

Welcome, September!

Essie -- the Invisible Cat

Last night my nephew Maxden who just turned 8 came to spend the night. I have 6 nephews and 4 of them live in town. They come to "Aunt Kristy's and Uncle Brian's" one at a time for sleep-overs! We took Maxden to Pizza Hut and the mall to pick out a baseball hat for his birthday present. We had so much fun! Then he took a bubble bath and watched "The Polar Express."

The boys love our cat Essie. Unfortunately, Essie doesn't love them. She is such a "scaredy cat" that she usually hides the whole time they are over. Since her favorite hiding place is under our bed, I'll find the boys lying on the floor desperately begging her to come out. Sigh! I feel so bad because I want them to enjoy her. Usually later in the evening when we are telling stories before bed, she'll sneak into the room to investigate. Last night I don't think Maxden ever got to see her.

I took this picture one day when she was lying on top of my clean laundry that I was getting ready to iron. Cats definitely have a mind of their own!!

One Week Down -- 35 More to Go!

What a great time the first week of school was! The first day was a little "bumpy" and I had to call a parent right away to remedy an "issue." However, "day two" was much better and by today the students seemed to be settling in. Since I have quite a few new students, I don't think they quite know how to take me! I find myself teaching like my mom -- it is so funny when I am saying or doing something in class and I'll think, "Ohhhh, that was so much like my mom!" Since my mom is a master teacher, I have always tried to teach like her!! Energy and compassion!

Don't worry no one has had to "drop for ten" -- yet!!

"Good Morning, Miss Dove" MBA 1994

"Good Morning, Miss Dove" Cast
Maranatha Baptist Academy

Today's featured production was presented at MBA in 1994. It has been neat to hear from different people who remembered Harvey at MBA. Since this play was the following year, many of the same actors starred again including Molly Akins, Bekah Flaming, and Aaron Sturgill. This was the year I talked Jason Wredberg into trying out. Wow! What a natural he was! I believe he found his "gift" that year and he has been dramatic (in a positive way) ever since. Jason is now a youth pastor at a large church in Raleigh, NC. He worked with my parents for several years at Postive Action. I always told Jason he had potential!!

Praise the Lord for what He has done in many of the lives of these young people!!

Happy Birthday, Pop!

I'm a few days late, but I did get his card and gift to him on time. My dad is my hero!! In addition to being a godly, Christian father, he is very intelligent and wise. I am so thankful to have had a father who was (and is) loving, dependable, and consistent. I'm so proud of my dad and thankful that he is still with us. He had quadruple heart bypass surgery a few years ago. He is doing well and works diligently with my mom at Positive Action for Christ.

When we were little we called our dad "Papa" because he is Scandinavian and that was what the father was called. Then as we got older his title was shortened to "Pop." I know it isn't the usual title, but I'm thankful for a unique title because he is definitely special!! I love you, Pop! Happy "66th" Birthday!!

Harvey TTA 1997

Well, I have already fallen behind in highlighting one past production per week. I'm sure you'll forgive me since my days are filled with teacher meetings and my nights have been filled with class (Monday), orientation (Tuesday) and church (Wednesday). Thankfully tonight I do not have a scheduled event. I do need to work on my wonderful lessons for next week!
Last week I highlighted my first production at MBA in 1993. Today I am going to jump to my second production of Harvey at Tennessee Temple Academy in 1997.
This is a picture of the cast:
Even if you do not know the students, it is fun to see similarities between like characters. One of my favorite memories of this play was opening night when I was running around trying to make sure everything was ready. I walked out into the auditorium and was greeted by two familiar faces, Oz Price and Mrs. Price (from Maranatha).
Oz had played the lead role in the MBA play four years before. I was so elated to see them. For some reason they were passing through town and the Temple campus and happened to see the posters for the play. Since the artwork was the same, they knew I had to be the director. What a wonderful joy to have a former Harvey cast member in the audience that night.
Great memories!

Aaron Leatherman played a hilarious Mr. Wilson and Rachel Harrison Ragan a perfect Mrs. Chauvenet. They are both married now (not to each other of course)! My how quickly time flies. I saw Rachel at Remembrandts a few weeks ago. Her little boy is named Harrison (I wonder where they got that name??) and she has another baby due in February.

Jessica Hutchison and Anna Vaupel were some of the first high school students I met at Temple. In addition to both girls being talented actresses , they went on to Temple University and were on the Columbine drama team about 3 years later. Anna graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor's in Speech Education a few years ago. She and I have a rich history together. I am so proud of her. Having just arrived in China, she will be teaching English there for the next 2 years. You will hear more about her as she has been in many of my plays and drama teams.
The last thing I remember about this production was that it was a week or two before we got married in 1997. I got sick at the beginning of the week of production and went to the doctor. I guess I thought I was superwoman and thought I could teach school, direct a play and get married all in the same month. The doctor wasn't sure what my "disease" was and so he quarantined me to my apartment. I said, "No, I'm sorry, sir, I can't stay in, you don't understand." His professional reply was, "No, I'm sorry but you don't understand." I had to stay home for 2 days. Dr. Hunt, my principal, was wonderful and had all of the cast members and seniors run errands for me. My good friend David Sneed stepped in and directed the dress rehearsal and I showed up for the performances that weekend. All went well and the rest is history!

The Rat Race Has Begun!

Wow! Nothing like jumping right back into the frying pan! We had a wonderful weekend filled with visiting with friends and family. Brian's cousin graduated from grad school on Sunday.

Teacher inservice started Monday. After inservice I drove 45 minutes to my night class and listened to informative speeches for 3 1/2 hours. Whew! Today we had three sessions of orientation during which time the students registered for their classes. It was an exciting day! Our enrollment looks good and there are new students in every grade in the secondary. It is going to be a great year! I'll do my best to post updates! Good night!:)

Summer Is Over

Today is my last day of summer vacation. Unbelievably inservice starts on Monday. I am excited! I love being a teacher! Even though the year is long, hard and challenging, summer break has a way of erasing the memories of the difficult days.

I love fresh beginnings. Having painted my classroom this summer, today I'm going to finish decorating my room. I have been praying for my students and the opportunities that lie ahead for the year. As the senior class sponsor, I will definitely be busy again this year.

Yesterday I received a message from a former student who is on deputation with her husband to go to the mission field. She thanked me for my influence on her life and her training. Her note brought tears to my eyes, not because I had done anything (trust me, sometimes I feel like a failure as a teacher). I was overcome with gratitude to the Lord for allowing me to have a small part in training young people to serve Him.

My Best Friend!

It was 12 years ago this month that I made the infamous trip to Tennesse staying with my future-in-laws after only meeting Brian once. Since my parents and Brian's parents were friends, they arranged for us to spend some time together. Thankfully the Lord was leading and guiding, and the rest is history.

Recently I found a list of characteristics about Brian that I made on the airplane flying back to Wisconsin. At the time I was trying to sort through all of my thoughts and feelings after the week was over. I thought he was:

Confident, Competent, a Leader, Decisive, Spiritual, Tender to the Lord, Humorous, a Hardworker, Reliable, Conscientious, a Servant, Close to family, Thorough, a Good planner, Organized, a Nice dresser, Classy, a Good listener, Complimentary, Athletic, Patient, a Natural Teacher, a Gentleman

Wow! What a list for a husband! I did not want to let this guy get away! God was good and Brian kept calling. I moved to Tennessee the next year. We dated for about nine months and were married the next spring. We celebrated our ten year anniversary this past March! Guess what? The list I made after one week is still true after ten years!
My mom always reminds me of the verse, "Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart." It was worth waiting 29 years to find my sweetheart!

Stage Fright

One of my colleagues at school has worked with me on a two-year project to incorporate communication skills training across the curriculum. As we continue our project this year, our principal has asked us to give a report on the results of the project during inservice next week. We have seen remarkable advancement in the attitude toward speaking in public among our students.

Of course, I have always enjoyed speaking in public. Being raised in a home in which communication was encouraged greatly enhanced my speech training. Since my dad was a preacher and my mom was a teacher there was no "fear of speaking in public" spoken of in our home. In addition, my parents were incredibly supportive of anything we did "up in front of people." I can remember working in Vacation Bible School, Jr. church, Sunday school, as well as giving testimonies regularly in youth group and in church.

I am so thankful for parents who, while they were teaching me to love and serve the Lord, also helped me to overcome stage fright before I knew what it was. Fear of speaking in public is the number one fear of adults. I have never been able to understand the reason for this startling statistic. Thankfully I had wonderful parents, caring teachers, and a supportive Christian community that affirmed my abilities and worth to a loving heavenly Father who has given all of us the gift of communication.

HARVEY MBA 1993

As you can tell by my sidebar directing plays is my hobby. When choosing a field for my masters I wanted a degree in Dramatic Productions. However, I soon realized I wouldn't be able to earn a living directing plays, so I went with Speech Communication.
Over the years I have continued to dabble in Dramatic Productions. I would like to feature one of the many plays I have directed or participated in each Tuesday. The first play I will highlight is my first attempt at directing Harvey at Maranatha Academy in 1993. I think posting pictures of the casts will be enjoyable because those who are checking may recognize some of the cast members.

Also, if you are in contact with one of these cast members please tell them about the blog. I would love to hear from my former students. I have just found Bekah Flaming on Facebook.

Incidentally, I have now directed Harvey three times. Obviously it is one of my favorites (but I don't think I will direct it again!!) I first saw Harvey at Miller Park in Bloomington, Illinois when I was in high school. I was delighted by the production and never forgot it.

If you are unfamiliar with the story, Jimmy Stewart starred in the original movie in 1950. Although it is very humorous, I am always struck at the story's end when the importance of relationships and people prevails. I won't give away the plot, but it is delightful! Anway, here is the MBA cast of Harvey from over 14 years ago:

Cast: Floor Keith Cashner (Harvey) Bottom row (L to R) Amy Carlson, Tiffany, Angelia Jordahl, Molly Akins, Bekah Flaming, Deanna Vegter; Top row (L to R) Oz Price, Jonathon Hanneman, Paul Poppert, Luke Akins, Steve Smith, Aaron Sturgill, Miss Carlson (me:)

(I think I got everyone correct -- I'm going by memory -- of course, these are the girls' maiden names)

Blessings of Friendship

Last night Brian and I had a delightful dinner with our good friend Sheila. Although Sheila has been an "honorary member" of Brian's family long before I came to town, I have known her for about 12 years. What a blessing she is! She never forgets a birthday or an anniversary of any one in our family. She sends us cards for just about every holiday (except maybe Halloween). We enjoyed catching up. Sheila is up on everything with technology and the internet. She told me she finally got onto MySpace the other day! I love the fact that she always wants to learn and do something new. Of course, I told her about our blog and so she is familiarizing herself with the art of blogging. I'm sure she'll be up and at it soon.

As a godly, faithful Christian, Sheila has spent her life serving the Lord and giving to others. Thanks for the delicious dinner, Sheila! We love and appreciate you!!

Home Improvement Queen

This summer I have not had to work except for teaching an evening speech class at a nearby technical college. The class meets every Monday night for 2 1/2 hours and is a hybrid class which means they meet half the time in class (to give presentations and discuss) and the other half of their work is done on-line. I've been wanting to become more familiar with online education, so I'm thankful for this opportunity.

I made a bargain with Brian that I would do "home improvement" projects instead of working another part-time job. I've gotten much accomplished and still have had much time off while doing some things for school.

One of my last projects was to stain our deck. I signed up for a Deck Staining Seminar at Lowe's (they do them all the time and they are free!!). When I got to Lowe's I was the only one who came for the class, but I got an individual tutoring session from "Ron, the Deck Staining Expert"!!! I took detailed notes (let me know if you'd like a copy). He loaded my cart with all of the supplies that I would need and I was off -- confident that I could do this! After all I do have Cutlan blood (and Grandpa Cutlan could do anything!!)

I got the deck all prepared just before we let on vacation. Then we have had so much rain since we got home that I wasn't sure if I'd get it down. Well, this week has a sunny forecast. Yeah! I got out early this morning and worked until lunch. Now it is too hot, but I may try to finish it tonight. Since I couldn't take a picture, I found this one from the internet:

It really is this dramatic! It looks awesome! I'll take a picture of the final product when it is finished.

Has anyone else done a project that went well?? I love to get ideas.

The most exciting thing was the money we saved. Last summer a guy that did some other painting for us told Brian he would give him a deal and do it for $500! Thankfully we didn't fall for his "deal"!!

Where has the summer gone?

It is July 31. Unbelievable!!
Tomorrow is August 1 and that means school is just around the corner.

Today I want to wish a
Happy Anniversary
to my "little brother" Chad and his wonderful wife Jennifer. They were married on this day just two years ago -- they are still newly weds!! Of course, I love them both with all of my heart, but it is especially nice to have a sister. Jennifer is a wonderful sister-in-law. She is thoughtful, intelligent, diligent and a wonderful wife to Chad. She puts me to shame, because she goes fishing, hiking, camping. . . (you name it) with Chad. My hat goes off to her (and doesn't she look cute in her hat!) -- she is always a good sport! Chad and Jen love the great outdoors. Well, whatever you guys are doing today, I hope you have fun. We have fond memories of your wedding -- what a beautiful day it was!!

Having Fun!!!

Wow! The response from this new blog is overwhelming! I just saw Sara's new post announcing the debut of our blog. I am honored if any of her loyal following actually check us out!!

I am hoping the older MBBC grads of my era (1985-1989) will get on board. I think you '90s grads are doing a great job! It just takes us "old foggies" a little while longer to figure out this "new-fangled" technology!! I have already heard from Tammy Weniger(Tammy and I went to high school and college together)Adrienne (Macdonald) Farnham, Lesli (Farnham) Nichols and Angela (Brown) Morris. So the word is spreading!! I can't wait for you to see what we looked like in college in the '80s!!

Maybe some of you pros can encourage the new bloggers that it isn't as hard as it seems!

Thanks for the encouragement!

I just figured out the color and font editing options!!

This is soooo fun!!

So far so good!!

Have a fantastic day!!

Posting Plans

Well, now that we are up and "performing" on this site, I've been thinking about how to arrange everything we have to say. Considering my life as a stage, I have subdivided the acts in the following ways:

1. My relationship with God
2. My relationships with my family
3. My relationships with my friends
4. My relationships with my students

While these relationships definitely overlap, I want to reflect, remember and recommit to all of them as I communicate through this medium. I will mention the day to day, but will endeavor to rotate comments through these four important acts of my life.

Unfortunately, my camera is on the blink, and so I'm not able to show current photos. (This picture is from a couple of years ago when I was directing "You Can't Take It With You.") However, I don't think this necessarily a negative. It will give me a chance to catch up with the happenings and memories of the rich relationships in my life. I'm looking forward to the journey!!

God is Good!

I would like to thank the Lord for His goodness! Not just for the good things He has done for me, but also for the trials.

Last year in English class we did an entire unit studying C.S. Lewis. What an inspiring writer! Although his writing is philosophical and deep, it is also practical and understandable. After studying his life, each student chose one of Lewis' works to read followed by an oral presentation of the lessons learned. We concluded the unit by watching Shadowlands starring Anthony Hopkins as Lewis. What a rich, enlightening journey for the entire class!

We heard a preacher speak on Sunday who had gone through the great tragedy of losing his 8 month old daughter. I sat spellbound listening as the man emotionally, yet calmly shared his heart. I couldn't help but be impressed that this man knows what it means to go through the "Valley of the Shadow of Death" and is still praising God. My prayer is that through the disappointments and setbacks in my life God will continue to make me stronger and allow me to encourage others. C.S. Lewis wrote A Grief Observed in which he describes the pain of losing his wife. Through Christ there is victory!

Lights, Camera, Action

Well, I have spent the summer getting my life under control (if there is such a thing). I'm back to wearing contacts, sticking to an eating and exercise plan, spending more time reading, and learning about the world of online communication.

As I've been busy trying to survive as a college professor and a high school teacher for the past few years, I did not realize that many family members, college friends, camp friends, former students and the rest of the world was spending their time blogging. Wow! Have my eyes been opened this summer! I have learned more about the bloggers in these groups than I have known about them in the past 10 years.

My excuse for not blogging was that I was too busy. However, I now realize "busyness" will not be an excuse years from now when I haven't kept in touch. So, here I am. I have always loved the stage -- thus the title for my blog will be "Life's a Stage!" I am excited to reconnect with so many dear friends and have more frequent contact with my wonderful family.

Now, I'm not in competition with my incredibly artistic and creative cousin Sara Mincy, but I'll do my best!! Hope to hear from many friends!!
